Welding training can take many forms. The “Theory” portion of welder training can vary widely among institutions, course goals, and instructors. Some prefer to use textbooks, some like videos, some talk about it in the shop, and some like to “mix it up.
I am partial to content that a student can use without toting a book around or a small book. In the book department, I have started using the “Metal Trades Handbook” but I also like content to be online. The problem is that developing online content from scratch can be a bit time consuming. BUT when its done, its there to be used.
I have used various systems over the years to create content including Camtasia Studio, Active Presenter, and of course Powerpoint. Additionally, some LMS allow for content creation using built in tools. Canvas has a nice interactove vide feature that I really liked. I though, like the LMS called Moodle.
Moodle has quite a few activity types that are built in and I have used a few of them but Moodle and other LMS’s also allow for using a system called H5P. I have a few activities I have created over the years at https://h5p.org/user/163448 and you are welcome to look at them. The one I recently discovered is the “Branching Scenario”. It allows the user to navigate images, text, videos with branching based on selections and/or question responses. Below is an example of the branching scenario addressing GMAW bead profile. This is very basic and text only. The tool also allows for interactive images and videos.
