Theory Work
I really believe that the education world, as far as CTE goes, goes a little overboard on theory/bookwork BUT in my case, that knowledge has always been a fun part of this hobby I get paid for. So I like to share it. I like to weld even more so I am always looking for a way to make the “bookwork” both profitable to the student but also not a burden to me. So I have always leaned towards “online” content/assignments. Even if the content is in a printed book, I will post the assignment in my LMS just to make it easier to track and avoid “papers” all over the place. (I am NOT neat or organized with physical objects).
The AI tool I have been using is ChatGPT and I have been experimenting for a couple of years. The improvements have been coming fast and “prompting” has become easier. Not sure if its me learning how to prompt or the ChatGPT versions getting better, but regardless, its seems to useful.
Quiz Questions
Creating quizzes and managing quizzes is a time consuming affair that takes away from the most valuable thing I can do which is be in the shop with my students. Sure, I could get the typical “Textbook” and “Workbook” and give assignments but I still have to put some time into assessments and verifying work was done. With an online LMS such as Moodle, Canvas, Blackboard etc… these questions can be managed, tracked and graded eaily however an LMS does not write the questions for you. Some textbooks do provide question banks and thats great but I have tried to steer away from conventional welding textbooks for a couple of reasons. You can ask in the comments if anyone is reading this. I can write up many of the things I want students to know or find that information in already existing content online BUT building questions is a painful and time consuming process.
I asked AI
I started a prompt as follows “Can I upload a .pdf document and have you generate some Moodle Compatible questions from specific pages?”
Within 15 minutes I had 20 questions (ChatGPT made a duplicate question when I asked for additional questions),
All questions were compatible with my LMS Question bank and matched the content in the reference. After that I asked to create an HTML version that I could share on this post. The question name in a few may give away the answer but it doesn’t show up in my LMS.
Anyway, if this is interesting to you or you have something to say about it, let me know.
Below is an HTML version of the quiz and at the bottom of the page is a link to the Chat
